On 8th December 2023, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) will host the inaugural symposium for their joint laboratory on the Chinese economy. The event will take place from 1:00 pm to 4:15 pm at LT2, Executive Education Suite, Cheng Yu Tung Building, CUHK.
The symposium will feature two sessions. The first session, titled “The Changing Chinese Economy,” will include presentations from Barry Naughton of UC San Diego, Yifan Zhang, and Zheng (Michael) Song of CUHK. They will discuss topics ranging from the shift from industrial policy to a state-directed economy, the dynamism and productivity growth in China’s manufacturing sector, and the growth prospects of China.
Following a brief coffee break, the second session will focus on “Dynamics in Political Economy.” This session will feature presentations from Gaurav Khanna of UC San Diego, Chao Xi, and Ying Bai of CUHK. They will explore the causes and consequences of international student flows from China to the US, data-driven approaches to studying Chinese laws and legal institutions, US trade policy toward China and the reshaping of global supply chains, and knowledge suppression and resilience under censorship.
The symposium is open to the public, but the quota is limited to 40 heads on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested parties can register on https://cloud.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/webform/view.php?id=13679273.
This inaugural symposium marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between CUHK and UC San Diego, providing a platform for scholars to share their insights on the Chinese economy.
