The Chinese University of Hong Kong-University of California, San Diego Joint Laboratory on Chinese Economy

Established in December 2023, the Chinese University of Hong Kong-University of California, San Diego Joint Laboratory on Chinese Economy is a joint venture between

  • Department of Economics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK); and 
  • 21st Century China Center (21CCC) of School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS), University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego). 

The Joint Laboratory is envisioned as a central hub facilitating the exchange of ideas and collaboration between multi-disciplinary experts from both universities. The CUHK Department of Economics is well-known for its faculty members’ prolific output on diverse topics related to Chinese economy; the UC San Diego GPS and 21CCC conduct interdisciplinary social science research in comprehensive dimensions of China, which is influential to policy discussions on China and U.S.-China relations. 

Acknowledging the need of addressing complex problems and challenges faced by China’s economy today through interdisciplinary efforts, the Joint Research Laboratory aims to foster a dynamic environment for collaborative and reciprocal research activities that lead to groundbreaking insights and innovative solutions with far-reaching implications for the world economy. 

The missions of this Joint Laboratory are 

  1. to promote interdisciplinary studies of China’s institutions and economic development; 
  2. to engage researchers from around the world and conduct studies of high impact on issues of the Chinese economy; and 
  3. to draw top-calibre students to the existing postgraduate programmes. 

The Joint Laboratory is currently led by Co-Directors Professor Ying Bai from CUHK and Professor Ruixue Jia from UC San Diego, gathering a group of multi-disciplinary researchers in political science, sociology, law, computer science, environmental studies, economics, etc, to conduct the following three strategic projects in the coming five years –

  1. Economic History and Development
  2. Government and Business
  3. Institution, Science, and Technology
